06:06 pm - Three updates in one day! Wack job millenialist archaeologist to unearth ark of the covenant August 14th
So things to note about this guy:
[1] He isn't Jewish
[2] He volunteered in the 1967 war
[3] He wears an orange bracelet
[4] One of his former students went on to write the script for Raiders of the Lost Ark
[5] He believes the discovery of the ark on tisha b'av will usher in an age in which the world is "turned right-side up"
[6] did I mention he isn't Jewish?

are they sure that this is the ark? and pardon me for asking, but why is it a big deal that he is not jewish? i have my supicions ;) but i wanna know what you have to say about it first. they'll know that its the arc when they open it and it melts nazis. ![[User Picture]](http://l-userpic.livejournal.com/43452930/1105953) | | From: | tagonist |

What he's talking about is the restoration of the land of israel and (possibly) the messiah. The orange bracelet is a zionist/settler badge that basically means all the land is for the jews, everybody else can take a swim. There have been some interesting articles lately (in the wake of the de-settling of Gaza) about the symbolism of the orange bracelets but they're beyond the scope of this article.
The question is why does a christian have any interest in any of this? Its nice that he takes an interest in pre-christian archaeology, but his political stance on the contemporary world is downright creepy. There are evangelical christians who believe that only by the restoration of israel can the christian messiah return to earth (n.b.- and kill all the jews) and given Jones' texan roots and slightly fascist politics, I wouldn't be surprised if this is where he's coming from.
The other viewpoint of course is that even if he were jewish, zionist/settlerism still sucks. Whatever else we guess about his larger beliefs, the fact that he's wearing an orange bracelet confirms that he's at least a little off to the bad side. there was a big article recently - i want to say in the NYT within the last 3 weeks or so - about the hordes of evangelicals who are super-zionist precisely b/c of what you mention - that the 'restoration' of israel will bring on the end times. that whole left behind thing is tied into it too... ![[User Picture]](http://l-userpic.livejournal.com/43452930/1105953) | | From: | tagonist |

Whoops, my bad. Its much more complicated and... weird. I have a hard time following all of it. Look up the wikipedia article on the Noahide movement.
Also be warned, the lubavitchers have a noahide movement as well, owning www.noahide.com, and they are total wingnuts. Total. ![[User Picture]](http://l-userpic.livejournal.com/45905068/7581772) | | From: | abcission |

what a nut. also, is this paper always so wingnutty?
israel historians: what was this 'evil report' by the "spies" Meir, Motta Gur and Moshe Dayan?
also, my boss says that indiana jones was probably modeled on a upenn archaeologist of back in the day. (also, he worked in lots of different areas, rather than just in the biblical areas). not that that is terribly relevant. in the archaeological world, if you favorably compare yourself to indiana jones, EVER ---- DING! Wingnut! ![[User Picture]](http://l-userpic.livejournal.com/43452930/1105953) | | From: | tagonist |
